The first two where statement-less amounts, probably more speaking about the money, they could find for this project, then stating what a composer should earn. Interestingly enough, Agvarde, the last contributor, wanted to add their amount to the other twos, and consciously not buy another day for it. I guess, they wanted to raise the 27th of february to a reasonable (in their minds) fee for a composers working day on a Saturday.

Here their answers the questionair:

Lars, for BEK

Pay A Day:

Does your commission fee represents your idea, what an artist should earn per day?
No, less.

How did you chose 'your' day?
Random

Does the kind of day - week or weekend - made a difference for your fee? Should it make a difference?
No difference

Would you find it weird to not get a free ticket to the performance of the piece, you payed for?
Yes

Did you ever pay for an artwork, beside paying for entrance tickets? Did you ever commission a work of art?
Yes to both questions

Do you expect me to work on this project/piece? How would you specify your commission, if I asked you to?
Do your best

Did you check my personal blog/website before you decided paying me a day of work? And did the work you saw there have an influence on your decision?
No

Do you expect me to spent the entire day working? Should my working time be related to the fee? Would you suggest a logical formula for this?
Result matters, not the time spent

Do you have a message coming with your contribution? Or a special question? Which one?
-

In general:

Would you pay only for good art?
You never know in advance what will be good or bad, do you..

Who should pay for art? (society, artists themselves, other artists, sponsors, the actual audience, ...)
Everybody

Who should be payed for art? (everybody, who makes art? everybody, who calls himself an artists? the state, so they can pay the artists? amateurs? studied artists? only the good ones? ...)
Those who make art
What should an artist earn per day?

Enough to make art tomorrow, as well.
What should be the relation between the fee and the work of art? Should their be an influence from one or the other side?
-

Social Piece:

Do you like the title?
I thought Pay-a-day was the title

Do you mind, if the piece doesn't include music?
No

Would you mind being actively integrated in the performance:
- as a member of the audience?
- as a sponsor?
I prefer passive integration as a member of the audience

Will you be there at the performance (10 March 2010 in Bergen)?
I'll do my best to be there

Should Social Piece be related to Pay A Day? Should it reflect the sponsorship, the single fees and the raised questions and their answers?
In some way it will be, regardlessly

Do you have a wish for Social Piece?
Good luck to you and the kids

Avgarde:

Does your commission fee represents your idea, what an artist should earn per day?
No, the fee is what we could afford. I placed our fee on a day where you had already received some funding, thus you will receive a higher salary for that day. This seemed fitting, since our contributions did not correlate to an appropriate days wage.

Would you find it weird to not get a free ticket to the performance of the piece, you payed for?
No. As an arranger I know better than most that the ticket is actually a very small portion of what a performance actually costs, so I realize the futility in demanding free entrance.

Did you ever pay for an artwork, beside paying for entrance tickets? Did you ever commission a work of art?
Yes. Avgarde as a concert arranger has both paid for art, and has also commissioned pieces before.

Did you check my personal blog/website before you decided paying me a day of work? And did the work you saw there have an influence on your decision?
I was aware of your work before this piece, so unfortunately I cannot answer this honestly. The decision to contribute was made as a show of solidarity since we are members of the New Music community in Bergen.

Do you expect me to spent the entire day working? Should my working time be related to the fee? Would you suggest a logical formula for this?
I expect to see a finished product, of which you would be proud to present. Unfortunately there is no formula that I know of for how much one earns in the cultural field. However, if you absolutely must put it in a formula may I suggest the Pythagorean theorem?

Do you have a message coming with your contribution? Or a special question? Which one?

In general:

Would you pay only for good art? If I had the ability to time travel? Possibly. Otherwise it's quite hard to know beforehand if a performance will be what one considers as good art.

Who should pay for art? (society, artists themselves, other artists, sponsors, the actual audience, ...)
Everyone. It keeps society honest and sane.

Social Piece:

Do you mind, if the piece doesn't include music?
Since you have called it a composition I had assumed it involved music. It does not need to include music if you as the artist do not believe that's what the piece is about.

Would you mind being actively integrated in the performance:
- as a member of the audience?
It depends on what one must do to be actively integrated.

- as a sponsor?
It depends on what way you intend to integrate it.

Will you be there at the performance (10 March 2010 in Bergen)?
Yes

Should Social Piece be related to Pay A Day? Should it reflect the sponsorship, the single fees and the raised questions and their answers?
Yes, simultaneously.

Do you have a wish/concern for Social Piece?
I want it to create Social Peace. David Helbichhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02029043952191371590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1097554261636406401.post-89983096952637534632010-02-10T13:25:00.008+01:002010-03-01T19:50:51.359+01:00PAY A DAY 8, sponsored by Vetoes (10-02-2010)'Read more' for the answers of Andy from Vetoes to the pay-a-day questionaire.

Here the answers of VETEOS to the general questionaire:

Does your commission fee represents your idea, what an artist should earn per day?
No, artists deserve to earn more for their work - the fee is what I could reasonably afford.

Would you find it weird to not get a free ticket to the performance of the piece, you payed for?
No, the performance is a separate event to the writing of the piece.

Did you ever pay for an artwork, beside paying for entrance tickets? Did you ever commission a work of art?
No, this is the first time I have been involved in something like this.

Did you check my personal blog/website before you decided paying me a day of work? And did the work you saw there have an influence on your decision?
Yes - I found the concept of the piece interesting and also wanted to contribute to the valuable research into people's attitude towards artists that the project will provide

Do you expect me to spent the entire day working? Should my working time be related to the fee? Would you suggest a logical formula for this?
There is no logical way to link fees with working time on a per hour basis - as with all art, the quality and quantity of what is produced can vary from day to day according to the artist's mood. Being in the right frame of mind is essential to creating innovative and interesting art. The artist should aim to spend as much time as is needed to be satisfied with their own work while at the same time aiming to complete the entire piece over a period of time during which they can reasonably support themselves using the TOTAL commission fee (and any other sources of income).

Do you have a message coming with your contribution? Or a special question? Which one?

In general:

Would you pay only for good art?I would pay for any sort of art I think I might find interesting or enjoyable.

Who should pay for art? (society, artists themselves, other artists, sponsors, the actual audience, ...)
A combination of sponsors and audience. In order to produce art in the first place to attract an audience, an because it often takes a long time to become well established in any creative career, the artists must have some sort of funding. While it is possible to finance oneself by working at the same time as writing, having sponsorship allows artists to dedicate more time to creating.

Social Piece:

Do you mind, if the piece doesn't include music?
I would hope the piece is somehow music or sound based, as I enjoy this artform most, though this is personal taste.

Would you mind being actively integrated in the performance:
- as a member of the audience?
No, I find audience integration in pieces interesting and entertaining.

- as a sponsor?
No, please feel free to use my name or band name (Vetoes) in the piece - if you would like to sample any of our music for sound based elements of the piece, please get in touch, we're happy for you to use it!

Will you be there at the performance (10 March 2010 in Bergen)?
Possibly - I hope to be there but have not yet booked travel and might not be able to get time off work. I hope to be there!

Should Social Piece be related to Pay A Day? Should it reflect the sponsorship, the single fees and the raised questions and their answers?
Yes, the issues raised by the piece are very important to artists - it should be important that these are expressed by the piece.

Do you have a wish/concern for Social Piece?
Please have fun creating it!David Helbichhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02029043952191371590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1097554261636406401.post-13862225111561199902010-02-07T14:08:00.001+01:002010-03-01T19:51:45.061+01:00Pay A Day 7, sponsord by Borealis Festival (07-02-2010)Here under the answers to questionnaire 1. Since it is the second time Borealis pays a day, you can read the same answers in the post for Day 1.

Borealis pays today much higher amount than on Day 1, which outlines two very opposite positions in the discussion: How much should a composer / an artist earn per day?

Here the answers of Alwynne Pritchard as BOREALIS:

Pay A Day:

Does your commission fee represents your idea, what an artist should earn per day?

Well, as we have offered two very different fees, I would say it represents rather the difficult relationship that I think exists between money and pretty much everything else in the world.

How did you chose 'your' day?

I wanted Borealis to straddle the timeframe in which you're working, so I chose two days at either end of the project.

Does the kind of day - week or weekend - made a difference for your fee? Should it make a difference?

As I am answering this with my Borealis - institutional - head on, I will say yes, it does make a difference.

Would you find it weird to not get a free ticket to the performance of the piece, you payed for?
Yes.

Did you ever pay for an artwork, beside paying for entrance tickets? Did you ever commission a work of art?

Yes. Borealis commissioned new work regularly.

Do you expect me to work on this project/piece? How would you specify your commission, if I asked you to?

That it somehow relates directly to the questions raised through this kind of commissioning proces.
Did you check my blog/website before you decided paying me a day of work?

Yes.

Do you expect me to spent the entire day working? Should my working time be related to the fee? Would you suggest a logical formula for this?

(here the answers of Tor Kristian Liseth)

Pay A Day:

Does your commission fee represents your idea, what an artist should earn per day?
No not at all, as an artist myself it more represents my current economical situation

How did you chose 'your' day?
It was more random, but I thought it would be good for you to work on the piece before christmas

Does the kind of day - week or weekend - made a difference for your fee? Should it make a difference?
It didn’t but it should. As with all occupations, working in weekends, if its not voluntarily, should be paid extra.

Would you find it weird to not get a free ticket to the performance of the piece, you payed for?
No not at all.

Did you ever pay for an artwork, beside paying for entrance tickets? Did you ever commission a work of art?

Yes, I have commissioned several live video artworks for different events

Do you expect me to work on this project/piece? How would you specify your commission, if I asked you to?

I wouldn’t interfere with the your work, but expect you to work on this piece.

Did you check my personal blog/website before you decided paying me a day of work? And did the work you saw there have an influence on your decision?

Yes i checked it out, but it didn’t have any influence. I consider the concept very interesting, and my contribution was more based on that.

Do you expect me to spent the entire day working? Should my working time be related to the fee? Would you suggest a logical formula for this?

No I think you should adjust your work according to the pay.

Do you have a message coming with your contribution? Or a special question? Which one?

http://gina-tricot.blogspot.com/
A poet trying to live as long as he can only from the fee he got for his newly published book.

In general:

Would you pay only for good art?

If I buy finished art, yes (good in my eyes). If I commissioned something, I would try to ensure the quality before hand and would except it whatever the outcome would be.

Who should pay for art? (society, artists themselves, other artists, sponsors, the actual audience, ...)

All of the mentioned

Who should be payed for art? (everybody, who makes art? everybody, who calls himself an artists? the state, so they can pay the artists? amateurs? studied artists? only the good ones? ...)

Depends on where the money comes from.

everybody, who makes art as a profession?

Yes, but not necessarily from the state.

everybody, who calls himself an artists and wants to live from it?

Yes, but there should be a difference adjusted according to how many years he/she has studied and worked and field of work.

the state, so they can pay the artists?

no

What should an artist earn per day?

Depends on how many years he/she has studied and worked and field of work. Maybe 1500 nok per 8h working day, as the lowest fee/tariff.

What should be the relation between the fee and the work of art? Should their be an influence from one or the other side?

Preferably none, but as it is today it’s difficult not to be influenced by the money if you’re hungry for food.

Social Piece:

Do you like the title?

yes

Do you mind, if the piece doesn't include music?

No

Would you mind being actively integrated in the performance:
- as a member of the audience?

To watch it, yes.

- as a sponsor?

no

Will you be there at the performance (10 March 2010 in Bergen)?

I hope so

Should Social Piece be related to Pay A Day? Should it reflect the sponsorship, the single fees and the raised questions and their answers?

Could be interesting if it reflected the sponsorships – work of art strictly based on how many hours you could work with the money you get.

Do you have a wish/concern for Social Piece?

Work on Social Piece (show 10 March 2010): looking at the (potential) conditions of the performance and their social aspects. Dinner with sponsor: thinking and talking around work time, free time, payment, the plesure of work, the status of work, etc. One of our insights during a good belgium beer:

I think it is interesting to note that for many people like, for example, Alan and I (the London Performance Collective) £30 holds a lot of value! Both of us are currently studying and have no fixed income. It would be interesting to take this into account and also include it in the discussion on the online blog, it raises issues about the value of art and the value of time. There is also the question of art being a luxury commodity. If people who have no money want to get involved in funding the production of art what impact will this have?

This was the awnser of me stating that for 30 Pounds I might only work a little in the morning.

Todays email said:

And apologies that we could not offer you more money.

Pay A Day:

Does your commission fee represent your idea, what an artist should earn per day?

No, our commission fee represents what we can afford in the current economic climate and also what we can spare considering that we are not earning much, if any, money. In fact £30 probably represents over 50% of our average weekly income!

How did you choose 'your' day?

Randomly, although we did consider that it might be nice for you to have two working days in a row!

Does the kind of day - week or weekend - make a difference for your fee? Should it make a difference?

We think that weekend days and holidays should be rated at a higher price…As they are not ‘normal working days’.

Would you find it weird to not get a free ticket to the performance of the piece, you payed for?

Possibly, but it is hard to say! Try charging sponsors and see if they complain! We don’t think it would be too much to ask.

Did you ever pay for an artwork, besides paying for entrance tickets? Did you ever commission a work of art?

No. We have bought paintings, CD’s and Scores, but we have not made any paid commissions as yet.

Do you expect me to work on this project/piece? How would you specify your commission, if I asked you to?

Of course we expect you to work on the piece in some manner, whether you are using your day to think and formulate ideas, or even craft questionnaires for sponsors! We think that the commission process should stem from an appreciation of the chosen artists work, therefore the artist should have the freedom to do as they wish with a commission…In other words we have no fixed specifications…

Did you check my blog/website before you decided paying me a day of work?

Yes.

Do you expect me to spend the entire day working? Should my working time be related to the fee? Would you suggest a logical formula for this?

In answer to this we have a series of questions: Can composition actually be divided up neatly into hour-long, or even daylong, time slots? Aren’t we all just adding money to the pot? How can you predict at what point you will be composing and at what point you will not be? How much work can you actually do in one day? Do you have days where inspiration just doesn’t come? Does the amount of money you are paid dictate how you think about that particular day?

Do you have a message coming with your contribution? Or a special question? Which one?

See above.

In general:

Would you pay only for good art?

It would depend on if we are contributing to the craft of the art (i.e. the process of composition) or the end result (ie, the piece). If the final result was ‘bad’ art, then we would not pay for it, however we would still willingly contribute towards the process of making the art as we have no idea whether it will be good or bad.

Who should pay for art? (society, artists themselves, other artists, sponsors, the actual audience, ...)

Everyone above! Anyone who cares about its existence

Who should be payed for art?

Artists.

What should an artist earn per day?

In an ideal world they should earn according to their skill level! Good artists should earn lots of money…! (but who defines whether an artist is good or bad?)

What should be the relation between the fee and the work of art? Should there be an influence from one or the other side?

See above

and multi tasking. emergency tasks for other jobs as well. will have to treat this like my normal working: spreading it over more time. but where is the day-thing then?

After one document, one good idea and one phone call: doc was 1,5-2 hours, good idea counts for 3 hours, phone call with preparation: 2 = 8 hours, a good day. not crazy, but not too bad payed either. so, still some hours to go. maybe tonight.

Now I know: will try to not work on Pay A Day, but on Social Piece during the payed days.

Again: the preperation of work and the work itself is not enough differentiated. Like acctually all my projects. Normally then only the work is payed and not the hours of preperation, communication and applications. Here, it is the opposite. (I recieve a little fee for the setting up of this project).
The net will be around 10 Euro.

some diary stuff of todays thoughts:

alarm 8:50;

9:23 finally getting up. breakfast with swedish guest and french croissants from maroccan bakery. discussion about Pay A Day;

she says, I should write down all the thoughts about the difficulty how to judge what is work'. I agree that this is the main question in a way, but I find it too evident. I was more thinking about a piece/work, which fakes clearness in the translation 'money to work to piece' and by this creates a resistance that makes a point. Like a real composition, where the seconds are translated to euros. tom told me yesterday about the same concept in a project of Muziekfonds';

I state that I want to report my work, but don't want to end up with a 'diary of an artist';

visitor suggests, that I ask the sponsors, what they earn per hour, then divide the amount I got for this day by this number and work the amount of time I then get. I like the idea. Difficulty is that there are institutions with different salaries involved;

I speak about diagrams on the blog, but can't remember of what kind;

am I working, while we discuss this? and she then?;

whilst bringing her to the elevator I have this idea to every day execute another work cliché: an artist day (sleep long, treat yourself good at breakfast, having a walk to get an idea, watching city as if it was a piece, in afternoon start thinking about drugs), then a employers day (get up early, work with smoking breaks and coffee breaks, lunch of one hour, after lunch start losing time till 17h, for example by flirting with whomever, then going home and don't think at work at all any longer);

now 10:38 writing this diary after and whilst going through emails and some news;

at the toilette suddenly realizing, that I actually should announce this work to my unemployed office, so that I don't receive unemployed money for this working day. And that this would be as well a way to put the daily amount into relation: I get 44 Euro (before taxes?) per day, when I am not working. But the work should be announced to the social office by my interim institution then. would they do this for 23,84 (200 * 0,11917543 = 23,835086) euro? What is the (administrative) minimum for a days work? And: I would need a contract for every day I work with Pay A Day. Shouldn't I better do this in the end? Since the interim offices anyway don't care, which days exactly you worked? but the money gets one big amount again and the differences would be equalized. This is actually a system already, which tries to translate artistic work into a standard system.;

was I working at the toilette?;

11:23 research time: how many emails I wrote for Pay A Day till today? how money conversations about this project? How many documents did I prepare? and after this: trying to find out the minimum amount of salary per day at randstad.;

11:37 was only answering mails that I found when opening my email program. one mail was a funny formulated, but serious intended suggestion to program an old piece of mine. work for another project... also searching for the right working music. a 2,5 hours techno set should do it.;

how do I separate the work on pay a day and 'Social Piece', namely the performance act as he result of Pay A Day?
12:43 while finding out, that I send 32 emails about the matter since the 24th of april 2009 (and received 33 since 20 april 2009) and wondering, if it is interesting, that the emails I received are all during office hours, while my answers are spread over 24 hours, I update the blog and write on facebook an email to a curator, inviting her to follow the project.;

14:20 lunch break. Since the plumbers, who without any warning stopped the water in the whole building, were gone for 2,5 hours "because the shop was closed for one hour" (which shop? what are they doing at the only shop in Brussels, which closes for lunch? and how much did they earn while waiting?) and so couldn't finish there job, I had to take my lunch outside. I managed to spend the exact amount of my net income on one dish (plat de jour) and a glass of sparkling water: 10,50 euro:

during coffee after lunch meeting an italian friend and talking about the emptiness of the diary like documented misunderstanding of the concept ''research'' in so many projects the last years;

after break discussing legal issues for hours. found out that I can't be paid less than 60 euros a day. or I make it a volunteer's compensation. but even this is 37 euros or something. and again: if we collect the daily payments? and spread it over some virtual days later on? then the daily payments are loosing their symbolic power. then someone could spread 100 euro over 30 days... (and I wouldn't work much for this);

calling with the sponsor of this day, borealis. speaking about different things. realizing how difficult and maybe completley not relevant it is to communicate my belgian situation.;

decision, to first worry about the communication for now and then decide about how to balance the two concepts: 'Pay A Day' and 'Social Piece' (the working title for the performance in march, which should grow out of this working days). Meaning: the balance between the complexities of the subject 'the concept of work in the arts' and 'how to create a meaningful gesture without getting stuck in answering questions'. "does this make sense?" (would Shlom have said.);

did it make sense to blok the entire day for 23 euro? I missed a rainy day and two appointments (for other, beter paid work.) But keeping the day free, makes the difference between work and off time more sensible.;

19:00: should I put this thoughts online? also thinking at the after-lunch-coffee discussion. and: this is not representive yet for what Social Piece could be (if we get some days of payed work at least). but still, it represents the dilemmas. it also shows, that I worked for 1,27 an hour. autch...

No. I think it must be very difficult to define a formula for this.

Do you have a message coming with your contribution? Or a special question? Which one?

No.

In general:

Would you pay only for good art?

If I knew what good art was, I might be able to answer this question.

Who should pay for art? (society, artists themselves, other artists, sponsors, the actual audience, ...

I have no idea. I'm not sure it's ever going to be a good idea to make a definite decision on this one.

Who should be payed for art?

Or this one.

What should an artist earn per day?

Or this one.

What should be the relation between the fee and the work of art? Should their be an influence from one or the other side?

Or this one.

Social Piece:

Do you like the title?

Yes.

Do you mind, if the piece doesn't include music?

No. I don't mind at all.

Would you mind being actively integrated in the performance:
- as a member of the audience?
- as a sponsor?

I don't mind being integrated into the performance in any way a all.

Will you be there at the performance (10 March 2010 in Bergen)?

Yes.

Should Social Piece be related to Pay A Day? Should it reflect the sponsorship, the single fees and the raised questions and their answers?

Yes.

Do you have a wish for Social Piece?

That it gets people thinking about stuff they might not otherwise have thought about. David Helbichhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02029043952191371590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1097554261636406401.post-59518635538859116162009-11-19T16:17:00.002+01:002010-03-25T21:40:15.681+01:00

David Helbichhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02029043952191371590noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1097554261636406401.post-8253731561193843402009-10-30T13:30:00.003+01:002009-11-22T18:36:42.750+01:0030 oct in Asane TIdende (Bergen news)
